Hello Molly! Yes, the back is fully enclosed with Sterling silver. When a precious stone is used, there is a piercing or cut out to allow light through to improve the sparkle of the cut stone. Since this is an antique button, we are more interested in protecting the button's nacre from oils, makeup, perfumes from the skin.

Enclosing the back also prevents dirt and debris accumulating.
The back is fully embossed with a sweet floral pattern.
